The campus is very pleased with the 53% response rate to the staff climate survey. There are encouraging results from the survey in the areas of individual commitment, positive feelings about co-workers, job satisfaction, and overall satisfaction. There are also areas that need management attention: communication, recognition, career opportunities, workload, and senior leadership.
In order to address the areas needing attention, Chancellor Córdova has established a Staff Climate Survey Steering Committee to review these issues and make recommendations to her and the EVC/Provost for improving our work environment. This will be done by means of three workgroups, charged by the Steering Committee, in the areas of communication, recognition, and career opportunities.
The Communication workgroup will be chaired by Vice Chancellor Bill Boldt; the Recognition workgroup will be chaired by Vice Chancellor Jim Sandoval; and the Career Opportunities workgroup will be chaired by Vice Chancellor Gretchen Bolar.
Workload will be addressed through the annual strategic planning process, which will begin this fall. Finally, Chancellor Cordova expressed in her June 16, 2006 message to the campus, "I take to heart the survey result that indicates that senior management (a category that includes deans, vice chancellors, vice provosts, the EVC/provost, and chancellor) needs to better understand employees' concerns. The other senior leaders and I take this very seriously and will do our utmost to listen to your concerns and communicate more effectively with you in the future." The Chancellor has created this action planning process, and is looking forward to receiving the resulting recommendations.
